Students
aren’t graduating…

What can we do?

Making the choice to attend college isn’t something done lightly. There’s the research, campus visits, applications and cost. So it may be a surprise to find out that nearly 1 in 3 students won’t make it to graduation.

The Challenge

Statistics show that a large number of college students aren’t graduating
and many drop out the first year.

31 Percent

31.3% of students currently in four-year programs will not make it to their sophomore year

40 Percent

40% of students currently in community college will not make it to their sophomore year

While there are individual reasons why students don’t complete their education, there is a common theme – lack of “college readiness”. Beyond the rigor of a college education, there are several reasons why students may drop out: being the first in their family to enroll in postsecondary education, being a single parent while attending school, and working more than 20 hours per week while in school. Research also suggests that a student with few or poor academic and career goals are at risk of not completing college.

So, what can parents and education professionals do about it?

Some high schools offer college and career readiness programs and some colleges offer a first year experience / student success course in the first or second semester to help prepare students for college. These courses should cover developing academic and intellectual competence, establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships, developing identity, deciding on career and lifestyle, maintaining personal health and wellness, and developing an integrated philosophy on life.

The Solution: COLLEGE READINESS
